Fairbuds take the Fairphone’s repairability down to seemingly impossible size

Fairphone has spent years showing us that it could do what major phone manufacturers suggest is impossible: make a modern-looking phone, make it brazenly easy to open up, design it so battery swaps are something you could do on lunch break, and also provide software support for an unbelievable eight to 10 years .

Bluetooth headphones, specifically wireless earbuds, seemed destined to never receive this kind of eco-friendly, ownership-oriented upgrade, in large part because of how small they are. But the Fairbuds have arrived, and Fairphone has made them in its phones' image. They're only available in the EU at the moment, for 149 euro (or roughly $160 USD). Like the Fairphone 4, there's a chance interest could bring them to the US.

Fairphone 5 sets a new standard with 8-10 years of Android support

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 30 August, 2023 - 10:30 · 1 minute

The Fairphone 5 is official and full of surprises. As you might expect, it's the usual repairable phone from Fairphone, with parts available to order and easily installable with just a screwdriver. A new phone means faster components and a more modern design. What you might not expect is Fairphone opting entirely out of Qualcomm's consumer upgrade cycle thanks to its choice of an "industrial IoT" SoC that promises longer support times. With a longer window from Qualcomm and a commitment from Fairphone to keep going even after Qualcomm's industrial support cycle, Fairphone says this device will end up with a jaw-dropping 8–10 years of OS support.

The Fairphone 5 is not for sale in the US. Europeans, though, can get the device for 699 euros (~$753), with preorders starting today and a ship date of September 14. For the basic specs, we have a mid-range loadout, starting with a 6.46-inch, 90 Hz, 2770×1224 OLED display. There's 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a side fingerprint reader, and a microSD slot. For rear cameras, it offers a 50 MP Sony IMX800, an anonymous 50 MP wide-angle sensor, and a time-of-flight sensor. The front cam is a 50 MP Samsung JN1.

Of course, the battery is removable, just like an old-school smartphone. You can see the big trade-off of that, though, since it's a rather small 4200 mAh battery. With a 161.6×75.83×9.6 mm body, devices in this size class usually pack a 5000 mAh battery. The good news with it being removable is that you could have extra batteries that you swap in whenever one dies, with zero recharge time. When you want to recharge it, you can pump 30 W into the battery. Some devices have water resistance, plus a removable battery, but you won't find an example of that here, with only an IP 55 rating. That means the Fairphone 5 can survive rain but isn't submergible.

Fairphone 4—the repairable, sustainable smartphone—is coming to the US

      news.movim.eu / ArsTechnica · Wednesday, 5 July, 2023 - 13:00 · 1 minute

Fairphone is a unique Android manufacturer; it offers a smartphone designed for repair, long software support times, and a selection of parts available online. The Dutch electronics manufacturer has mostly only focused on the European market and says, "When is Fairphone coming to the US?" is one of the most common questions it gets asked. Well, ask no more! The company is finally bringing the Fairphone 4 to the US—with some caveats.

Fairphone is launching a "US pilot" program to sell the Fairphone 4 in America in partnership with Murena , the primary developer behind the /e/ Android fork. Murena has been selling Fairphones in Europe for a while, and they come pre-loaded with the /e/ OS, instead of Fairphone's build of Android, and now the US is getting the deal. The phone costs $599.

"We know based on feedback we have received that there are many people interested in Fairphone in the US." Fairphone CEO Eva Gouwens said in the press release. "However, currently our main focus is on the European market. This collaboration with e/OS/ is a great opportunity for us to pilot selling devices in the US market with a long-standing partner and learn more about the American market.”
