The Case for Shaving at Night

      tests.marevalo.net / The Art of Manliness · Thursday, 26 January, 2023 - 16:34 · 3 minutes

Shaving is one of those daily rituals that most men take care of as part of their morning routine. It makes sense. Shaving in the morning allows you to start the day looking as fresh as possible and ensures you look clean-shaven longer throughout your waking hours.

But I’ve personally been a night-shaver for several years now and love it. Below I share a few reasons you might consider adopting this practice as well.

You Can Take Your Time With Your Shave. If you’re like most guys, you’re rushing to get ready in the morning. But you don’t want to rush a shave. That can lead to cuts and uneven stubble removal.

When you shave at night, there’s no rush. You can take your time, ensuring you get a close, comfortable shave without any nicks or razor burns.

Moreover, slowing down your shave makes the experience more enjoyable and relaxing. When you shave at night, you have the time to make yourself a barbershop hot towel . You’ve got the time to create a nice, warm lather with a badger brush . When you shave at night, you can make shaving more of a ritual and less of a chore.

Shaving at night also gives you the margin to try your hand at a more traditional shaving method: straight razor shaving . Time is your ally with straight razor shaving, especially when you’re first starting. You don’t want to rush the process.

It Saves You Time in the Morning. Even if you’re a pro at shaving, it still takes time. If you shave at night, it’s one less grooming chore you have to do upon waking. Use the extra time you save in the morning to catch some extra ZZZs or engage in a short session of meditation.

It Gives Your Face Time to Heal. This is a big reason why I switched to the nighttime shave. When you shave, you’re scraping a sharp piece of metal across your face. No matter how careful you are, you’ll have some irritation and even some nicks. When you shave in the morning, there’s a chance your face is going to look red and irritated as you go to work. If you’ve nicked yourself, you’ll likely have a little scab on your face or maybe even a bit of blood on your shirt collar. Not a good look.

When you shave at night, you give your skin time to heal from the scraping and cutting. Instead of looking irritated, your face will look nice and healthy.

If I Shave at Night, Won’t I Have Too Much Stubble in the Morning?

Some guys might be reading this and objecting to the idea of nighttime shaving because they’ll wake up in the morning with stubble or a full-blown five o’clock shadow (a 5 a.m. shadow, in this case).

This is a legitimate concern. If your facial hair grows fast and thick, the nighttime shave might not be for you.

However, if your facial hair grows slowly, you can still shave at night and look fresh in the morning.

I’d say my facial hair grows at an average rate. When I shave in the morning, I’ve got some stubble by the end of the day. But I’ve noticed that when I shave at night, I have less stubble after waking from eight hours of sleep, than I do eight hours after I shave in the morning.

There might be a reason for this. Hair growth is driven by our circadian rhythm, and studies have shown that hair grows faster in the morning than at night. This might explain why I’ve noticed that I don’t have too much stubble in the morning when I shave before bed: hair doesn’t grow as fast at night.

So if you have a fast-growing beard, you still might try the night shave. You may discover that you’ll wake up with less stubble than you think.

More relaxing shaves, more time in the morning, a more handsome and less irritated face. Yes sir, there’s a case to be made for shaving at night.

Skill of the Week: Shine Your Shoes

      Brett & Kate McKay · tests.marevalo.net / The Art of Manliness · Sunday, 15 January, 2023 - 16:07

An important part of manhood has always been about having the competence to be effective in the world — having the breadth of skills, the savoir-faire , to handle any situation you find yourself in. With that in mind, each Sunday we’ll be republishing one of the illustrated guides from our archives, so you can hone your manly know-how week by week.

Whether it’s an upcoming wedding, graduation, or simply another day at the office, a pair of shiny shoes can set you apart as a man who cares about the details.

Not only does shining your shoes add panache to your appearance, it is a necessary part of properly caring for and maintaining a nice pair of leather shoes or boots . The polish itself helps moisturize and waterproof the leather, lengthening the lifespan of your shoes.

All you need to get going is a soft cloth, a can of shoe polish, and a good shoe brush.

‘Queen of fashion’: Style icon Carla Zampatti farewelled at state funeral

      pubsub.do.nohost.me / TheNewDaily · Thursday, 15 April, 2021 - 04:06 · 2 minutes

Some of the country’s most powerful political, business and fashion leaders have gathered in Sydney to farewell fashion mogul Carla Zampatti.

Thursday’s official farewell was what Zampatti’s daughter described as “the best dressed funeral”, with guests adorned in her iconic designs, there to celebrate the 78-year-old’s life and work.

After founding her eponymous label in 1965, the Italian-Australian designer was remembered as a trailblazer in the industry, bringing practical, fashion-forward designs to the working women of Australia.

Zampatti’s pieces have been worn by everyone from Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, to former prime minister Julia Gillard and Denmark’s Princess Mary.

St Mary’s Cathedral was filled with Zampatti’s famous friends and fans, as well as hundreds of white orchids.

Attendees included former governor-general Quentin Bryce, who spoke ahead of Zampatti’s three children.

Julie Bishop, and former PMs Malcolm Turnbull and John Howard attended with their wives, Lucy Turnbull and Janette Howard.

Television presenters, and long-time Zampatti-wearers, Melissa Doyle and Natalie Barr, were also present.

    Reigning monarch

Zampatti’s children spoke of their mother’s warmness, ambition and her lasting legacy in the fashion world.

Her son and current CEO of Carla Zampatti, Alexander Schuman, said they referred to the label as “our other sibling, sometimes the favourite child”.

“She was a demanding boss and a demanding mother and saw that as a good thing because she’d achieved more than she ever dreamed of, and she wanted the same for you,” Mr Schuman said.

His sister, Bianca Spender, who is also a designer, said their mother loved a hug and called everyone ‘darling’.

“She was alive to beauty in any form,” Spender said.

“Dance, visual arts, fashion, architecture. The creativity of others genuinely inspired and uplifted her.”

“If she were alive today … I’m sure she would say this is the best-dressed funeral she has ever attended.”

Zampatti’s other daughter, Allegra Spender, commented on her mother’s strong feminist roots and commitment to seeing women thrive.

“We are very proud of you mum. We are committed to continuing your legacy of inspiring, empowering and supporting women,” she said.

Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher said Zampatti was unlike another famous name who died recently, Prince Philip. He will not receive a state funeral, because he was not a reigning monarch.

“Here in Australia … it could be said that Carla Zampatti was indeed a reigning monarch, the queen of fashion.”

Kirstie Clements: Study the classics, ladies – the 12 classic and essential wardrobe items, that is

      pubsub.dcentralisedmedia.com / TheNewDaily · Saturday, 6 February, 2021 - 11:00 · 3 minutes

Fashion stylists and designers often talk about wardrobe foundations, the key pieces that every woman needs to have every occasion covered.

When I see a list in a magazine or on social media, I always have a quick skim, to see if there is a new addition that I may have missed, like an orange catsuit, or silver platform rainboots.

But no, the classics seem to have pretty much remained the classics, so it’s worth just doing a rundown of the top 12 so we know we are on the right path.

    Top 12 wardrobe staples

    1. A tailored blazer

A tailored blazer in black, navy, or in a neutral like sand or khaki, a smart blazer will pull any outfit together and can even be put on over workout gear. Current styles are a little oversized and boxy, for ease of movement. I am currently eyeing off one in teal blue velvet for some added drama.

    2. High-waisted jeans

High-waisted seems to the defining trend for 2021, either straight legged, or loose fit. Warning – high waist and loose fit is heading into mom jeans, so probably better left to the young. High-waisted and straight is great look, with a heel and a jacket, at any age.

    3. A white shirt

White shirt. You can’t have too many. Oversized man’s style is a good option, looks great over blue jeans and black leggings.

    4. Leggings

Aha, the legging . They are such a modern, comfortable, versatile option for any age. Wear them with a big white shirt, or with a T-shirt and a longer-line blazer.

Leggings aren’t just for yoga and ’80s costume parties. Photo: Getty

    5. A trench coat

The Trench. A neat khaki trench is a no-brainer, a bit of French girl cool with a utilitarian edge. And pockets!

    6. A soft knit

A roomy black, grey or camel sweater is always appropriate, night and day. Short-sleeve sweaters are also a great trans-seasonal piece, very chic.

    7. A well-cut suit

A well-cut suit is another timeless solution piece. Black is an obvious option and will double as a tuxedo for more formal events, if you add jewels and heels. White or crème is also a gorgeous choice if you can bear the dry cleaning. The jacket and pants can also be worn separately of course to make more outfit options; a cream jacket with jeans is a smart look for lunch or dinner dates.

    8. A dress

Choose any style that suits your figure type. It might be a silky slip dress (a sweater, cardigan or trench can be worn with it) A-line, a sack dress with puffy sleeves, a sheath, a button-through shirtwaister, a tunic. I bought a new one this week, mid length, long voluminous sleeves, which are edged with a band of striking yellow fluoro trim to add interest. And with, joy of joy, pockets.

    9. A t-shirt

T-shirt. A silky black T-shirt will work back with everything, a key wardrobe essential

    10. A mid-length skirt

Current styles are a wrapped and line, but again, go with the cut that suits your body shape. I am currently mad about bias-cut slip skirts with  elastic waists – I have them in metallic silver, navy silk and pink sequins. I love them worn casually with the cotton shirt and a sneaker.

    11. A hoodie

I feel like this is a newish foundation piece, but since COVID, lounge wear and sportswear feel like they are here to stay. Make it cashmere for ultimate in casual luxe.

    12. A comfy cardigan

The oversized cardigan. Chunky, ribbed or textured, the grandpa cardigan is key to easy weekend style.

There’s your basic perfect 12. Next week we will add some insanity. I need to discuss my new lime green patio pants.
