    Supersized trucks and SUVs seem here to stay, unlike the auto show

After essentially flat sales in 2019, (most of) the auto industry came to Chicago this week for the first big auto show of the year. In terms of making headlines, the 2020 Chicago show is yet more proof that the days of the big trade show are almost at an end as OEMs increasingly opt for standalone events to premiere new products. Two laps of the McCormick Place convention center was more than sufficient to take it all in, and while there was little new, a clear trend was evident. Efficiency, electrification, or advanced safety systems mostly took a back seat to size, with monster-faced SUVs and trucks everywhere I cared to look. As a harbinger of things to come, I dare say there was even a sense of menace lurking in the shadows.

Arguably the biggest product news of the week—albeit one of little interest to most of this audience—was the launch of Cadillac's newest Escalade. But that took place in California earlier in the week, and the biggest, brashest, body-on-frame behemoth didn't show its bluff nose (or anything else) in the Windy City. The closely related Suburban and Denali (and their full-size pickup cousins) were out in force, and I'm not being dramatic when I say some of them felt physically threatening to stand next to even when they were stationary. I'm 5' 7" (1.7m) tall, and some of the hoods are now level with my shoulders, which is a recipe for vast, child-swallowing blindspots in front of their drivers. At a time when pedestrian safety is headed in the wrong direction, one has to wonder how we can get this pendulum to swing the other way.

Chicago's press preview coincided with a string of financial results, and as ever there are winners and losers. Lots of OEMs are changing the way they share their results, ending monthly sales. General Motors saw profits decline by nearly 20 percent in 2019, but it still ended the year $6.7 billion in the black. GM might have made a Super Bowl splash with a teaser for an electric Hummer, but the best its combined booths could boast if you were looking for evidence of its $2.2 billion electrification investment were a couple of Chevy Bolts.

    À New York, des piétons ont soulevé ensemble un SUV

INSOLITE - Tout est bien qui finit bien. Dans les rues embouteillées de New York , dimanche 26 janvier, un acte de solidarité collective a permis de venir en aide à une piétonne accidentée, comme vous pouvez le voir dans notre vidéo ci-dessus .

Sans l’aide des passants, nul ne sait comment l’histoire aurait fini sur un carrefour du Lower East Side . Un SUV a en effet percuté une piétonne qui semble avoir glissée ensuite sous le véhicule. Des images postées sur Twitter par Colby Droscher montrent d’abord la confusion avant de capturer ce qui semble bien être un élan d’organisation spontané et citoyen.

Plusieurs piétons ont convergé vers le véhicule avant d’unir leurs forces pour le soulever et dégager la victime. Prise ensuite en charge par les services d’urgence, cette dernière était consciente, et même plutôt alerte sur son téléphone. Elle a pu être amenée sans encombre à l’hôpital.

    Les SUV, gros véhicules urbains très populaires, ont été la deuxième source d'augmentation des émissions de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) dans le monde entre 2010 et 2018, selon le directeur de l'Agence internationale de l'énergie (AIE). Plus de 200 millions de SUV circulent aujourd'hui dans le monde, contre 35 millions en 2010, une tendance que l'on retrouve partout, relève en effet l'AIE dans une note parue mardi. «Ces dix dernières années, les SUV ont été la deuxième source de croissance des émissions de CO2», a affirmé, lors d'une conférence internationale sur l'électrification de l'énergie à Paris, son directeur. Après le secteur de l'énergie, mais avant l'industrie lourde (acier, ciment...), les poids lourds ou l'aviation. Souvent plus lourds et moins aérodynamiques, ces véhicules consomment un quart d'énergie en plus par rapport à une voiture de taille moyenne, souligne le rapport. «Si l'appétit des consommateurs pour les SUV continuait de croître au rythme de cette dernière décennie, ces voitures ajouteraient près de 2 millions de barils par jour à la demande mondiale de pétrole d'ici 2040, annulant les économies permises par 150 millions de voitures électriques», prévient le rapport, qui souligne aussi que «des voitures plus grosses et plus lourdes comme les SUV sont plus difficiles à électrifier».

If you live in the suburbs of an American city, you can barely cross the street without dodging an SUV. That's because SUVs and pickup trucks account for around 70% of new vehicle sales in the United States. With every major carmaker all-in on the form-factor, now is a great time to shop for an SUV or crossover. In a change from our usual reviews, we're going to pit three compact SUVs head-to-head-to-head to see which one is most deserving of your hard-earned cash.

Meet the contenders

Earlier this year, I spent a week each with the Nissan Rogue SL, the Jeep Cherokee Limited, and the Mazda CX-5 Signature. All are compact SUVs that start at around $25,000, but each is built with a different goal in mind.

The Nissan Rogue is the economical, jack-of-all-trades of the three and was the fifth-best-selling vehicle in the US during 2018. It has the best mileage and lowest sticker price. The Jeep Cherokee is built for versatility with multiple driving modes for all sorts of terrain, and the Jeep badge had the highest sales growth in the US during 2018. The Mazda CX-5 is the sportiest and has the most polished interior of the lot—and it outsold all of the other Mazda lineup combined in the US during 2018.

    Review: 2020 Range Rover Evoque goes big on luxury, price tag

There's a certain amount of predictability that comes with a Range Rover. The vehicle is smartly designed, the interior is nicely appointed, there are some very clever bits, it's going to offer a smooth ride—and there's going to be some lack of attention to detail that nags at you every now and again. The 2020 Range Rover Evoque is no exception.

The second generation of Range Rover's subcompact SUV made its US debut in February at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Jaguar Land Rover hasn't made massive changes, instead going for smaller tweaks to what has become its best-selling model worldwide. From the outside, the 2020 Evoque looks very similar to the pint-size SUV that debuted in 2010. Most of the changes are in the interior or under the hood. The 2020 Evoque gets the latest version of JLR's InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, complete with optional CarPlay and Android Auto support. TouchPro is a dual-display setup, with the usual infotainment functions on top and climate and seat controls on the bottom. It's very well-thought-out, but implementation is bumpy—a combination of small targets, noticeable lag between touch and response, and lack of tactile feedback leads to occasional frustration. It also takes too long to boot up after turning on the ignition.

JLR has equipped the 2020 Evoque with its mild hybrid EV powertrain. A 246hp (181kW) turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder gasoline engine is paired with a small electric motor that generates up to 103lb-ft (140Nm) of torque to assist with acceleration and smooth over turbo lag when you hit the gas. Combined, the MHEV powertrain churns out 296hp (218kW) and 269lb-ft (364Nm) of torque. The 48V battery lives under the passenger compartment and regenerates itself when the driver brakes or lets off the gas. While JLR claims the MHEV Evoque is 6 percent more efficient than its ICE-only predecessor, this hybrid system is intended to make for a more responsive and consistent driving experience.
